Meet David Wenger; bunch sprinting 40k time trialist
So that title pretty well sums up last night’s racing at the Driveway. Monthly series leader David Wenger and recent Texas State TT silver medalist (I can’t quit you Wenger) played a cool and intelligent hand in the patience game while teammates Ian Dille and Steven Wheeler hurled themselves off the front in search of a new white blouse. We were bested in that pursuit however by Colton Jarisch. Fine rider and bon viveur while earning his degree at St. Ed’s. I did not do much last night save for marvel at the difference between racing on training wheels and 808’s. I was without my usual equipment as my Zipp wheels have been sent up to Chicago a few days early to be inflated with helium over at Fermilab (truly minutes from Downers Grove). I’m impressed that they can accelerate small particles to about 70% the speed of light but seriously try getting my rear end up to McDonald Observatory sometime. That’s worth some grant money.
Asides aside, the final laps were a flurry of attacks and prime accrual. We did not contest the gambler’s prime but with 1 to go Wenger was firmly locked in my wheel. I took Wenger from just beyond the far end of the course to the final bend about 25m from the line before I saw his persimmon jersey surge to the lead. We’ll be using crit nats this weekend as a tune-up before next week’s all-important August 20th Driveway Crit. We planned to race for my wife in honor of her birthday but she will be in China so we will race for Ting instead because he is Chinese-American. Ahhh the transitive power of bike racing.

I think the whole team needs to eat more Frosted Flakes “Gold”…it seems to be working for one team member….
