Alan Ting
You know how Masters racers often say, if only I’d started cycling way back when? Well, that’s Alan Ting – now. Alan first encountered two wheels at the age of 11. During his father’s10th annual MS 150 bicycle trek to Austin, Alan says he, “added 100lbs of dead weight to the rear of the family tandem.” He’s been addicted to the sport ever since.
Alan didn’t consider racing competitively until 2003, when a shiny Fuji was offered as a prize for the Youth League at the Alkek Velodrome. One of two riders to show up, Alan concocted a homemade regimen of intervals and won the bike. A new racer was born. Later that year Alan joined the Northwest Cycling Club junior program, where he was taught the subtle nuances of track, and then road racing. In 2008 Alan won two junior national track medals and upgraded from a category 3 to a category 2 racer. With the support of the Bicycle Sport Shop cycling team, and the guiding hands of his four experienced teammates, Alan went from simply completing his first 80-mile road race, to racing aggressively off the front of the field.
Off the bike Alan’s time is dedicated to school, friends, the violin, and the piano. Starting this fall he will study business at The University of Texas-Austin, and looks forward to training full time with his teammates.
